10 new Florida hotels to check into

This is the first in an occasional series highlighting recent hotel openings in Florida.

The pandemic may have slowed travel for most of us, but the hotel industry kept moving ahead with their plans for new hotels, rebranding and debuting renovations in 2020. Here, we take a look at some of the hotels that have opened or re-opened in Florida over the past few months.

JW Marriott Tampa Water Street

Just in time for Super Bowl LV, the JW Marriott Tampa Water Street opened its doors in December 2020 and is already staking its claim as the luxury resort in downtown Tampa. The 26-story hotel has 519 guest rooms and suites, a Spa by JW, a rooftop pool, dining overlooking the marina, and is close to the Riverwalk and just a trolley ride away from Ybor City

Cambria Madeira Beach Hotel

Cambria Hotel Madeira Beach

The five-story, 125-room, waterfront Cambria Hotel Madeira Beach opened in Madeira Beach in December, with interiors are inspired by the legend of John LeVeque, a pirate-turned-turtle farmer who is credited as the first western settler of the area and who buried treasure on the beach. Guests can scope out their treasure hunt from the hotel’s rooftop pool and bar, and take a break from the hunt in the hotel’s spacious guest rooms.

Kimpton Key West, Ella’s Cottages and Ridley House – Florida Keys

Before the end of the year, Kimpton Key West collection opened its fourth and fifth Old Town boutique-style resorts, Ella’s Cottages and Ridley House. Ella’s is ideal for groups and guests who are planning to stay awhile, and honeymooners clamor for Ridley House. In September, the collection unveiled its 44-room Fitch Lodge; the 45-unit Lighthouse Hotel; and 85-room Winslow’s Bungalows. Each of the properties is pet-friendly, too!

Hotel Haya in Ybor City, Tampa, Florida

Hotel Haya – Tampa

In September 2020, Hotel Haya started welcoming guests to the bustling Ybor City neighborhood near downtown Tampa. The hotel’s decor is a nod to the “Golden Age of Havana” and is reminiscent of mid-century Cuba, and encompasses two history buildings, one of which is said to have hosted Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders. Today, the 178-room hotel also features an enclosed, private pool area and two restaurants, not to mention its location in the heart of Ybor City.

The Luminary – Fort Myers

A new light shines in downtown Fort Myers with the opening of the Luminary Hotel & Co. The 243-room hotel opened in September 2020 and takes its inspiration from the inventors and innovators who called and call this city home, like Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. Inside guests will find six options for dining and sipping cocktails, along with an indoor/outdoor fitness center and a pool overlooking the Caloosahatchee River.

Ponte Vedra Inn & Club Ocean House and Peyton House

In September 2020, Ponte Vedra Inn & Club debuted its new luxury accommodations, Ocean House and Peyton House, on Ponte Vedra Beach. The two new, three-story buildings add 41 luxurious beachfront guest rooms and suites to the resort’s portfolio; each room has sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean. With a chic, coastal decor that encourages relaxation, the accommodations are close to the Ocean Course and The Racquet Club, and the beach is just steps away.

THēsis Hotel Miami

In Miami, THēsis Hotel Miami opened in September 2020 at the intersection of three historic South Florida neighborhoods: South Miami, Coral Gables, and Coconut Grove. The urban hotel, with 245 guest rooms and suites, features chic architecture and fun artwork, not to mention a rooftop pool and bar, and two onsite restaurants.

Barbary Beach House Key West

The Barbary Beach House Key West opened at the end of June 2020 in Key West, and recently relaunched itself with people starting to think about traveling again. The 184 rooms in the oceanfront resort are meant to settle in and stay awhile, and invite guests to live the Conch Life. The suite accommodations feature separate bedroom and kitchen/living areas, and a number of rooms also include private balconies with ocean, garden and resort views. The hotel is pet-friendly, too!

Islands of Islamorada – Florida Keys

Last spring the Islands of Islamorada opened in Islamorada in the Florida Keys, and it’s welcoming guests who are ready to get away! The 7.1-acre luxury property includes 22 three-story waterfront villas that easily accommodate eight to 10 guests. The Ocean House has eight one-bedroom suites that can accommodate three guests, and it’s right on the Atlantic Ocean. Amenities at Islands of Islamorada include an oceanfront Tiki bar, paddleboards, kayaks, a fitness center, yoga on the lawn, two swimming pools and a whirlpool tub, pickleball and volleyball courts, and a private marina with 10 boat slips.

The Casitas at Cheeca Lodge – Florida Keys

Cheeca Lodge & Spa in Islamorada, long known for its luxurious property and impeccable service, opened 10 private villas last summer, and they’ve been a hit with guests since. Each one- and two-bedroom villa has a resort or ocean view, full kitchens and personalized butler service. Though the casitas are set away from the resort, all of the resort’s amenities are steps away, like a private beach, pool and tennis courts, The Spa and two tiki bars.
